Federation

What Federation Meansfor Your Organization

Every organization runs its own Relay. Yours connects to theirs when both administrators agree, and disconnects whenever either side decides to.

How It Works

Everyone runs their own server

Each organization holds its own users, its own history and its own rules. Neither side can see into the other.

Both administrators approve the link

Nothing is connected by default, and either side can withdraw it later.

Your teams message across as themselves

No guest accounts, and no second app for one partner.

Public and Private Users

A federated link doesn't expose your whole directory. Every account is one of two kinds, and you decide which.

Public users

Reachable by the organizations you've federated with. For the people whose job involves talking to the outside — liaison, procurement, support.

Private users

Exist only inside your own server. They can't be found or messaged from any other organization, however many links you've approved.

What It Changes for You

No shared vendor

Two organizations can work together without both signing with the same company in the same country. Cooperation stops being a procurement question.

No external accounts to manage

Federated colleagues arrive with their own identity and leave with it. Nothing to provision, nothing to deprovision.

Your rules stay yours

Retention, roles and who may speak outside the organization are set and enforced on your server, whatever the other side does on theirs.

Common Questions About Federation

“Does this put us on a public network?”

No. Your server is reachable only by the organizations you've connected to — there's no public directory and no discovery.

“Does it weaken the encryption?”

No. Messages are encrypted for the recipients' devices, not for servers, so federating adds nobody who can read them.

“Does our data get copied to them?”

No. Your users and your history stay on your server. Only the messages people actually send cross the link.

Tell us which institutions you need to reach. We'll set up a trial and federate it with a server we run, so you can watch it work before you commit to anything.
